Like any good turnaround story, the astounding progress made in 2011 by Innovative Systems must be understood in the context of 2010. In September of 2010, co-owners Rich Jankowski and Jeff Steier were tired of the long hours with no financial reward and no light at the end of the tunnel. The sluggish economy coupled with the negative attitude of the owners had caused them to come to the conclusion that the best course of action would be to quit running the business and sell it off to someone else. As a last ditch effort, they teamed up with ActionCOACH Business Coach Tom Palzewicz and discovered that they had been spending far too much time working in the business rather than on the business. Working with their business coach, Rich and Jeff began testing and measuring every facet of the organization and learned that by focusing on running the business rather than operating it the passion, vision, and belief that caused them to start the company 23 years ago returned. When I first walked into Rick Appleby's office in the end of February of 2014, it was because I had just had a business explosion and I was seeking more.  I told him the offerings I could bring to him, but before I left that meeting, I was the one wanting something from him. While my business of creating written and spoken content for books, educators, professionals, and others was doing very well, I was overwhelmed in the new success and on the well-paved road to a quick burnout.  I had been working approximately 70 hours per week and hadn't had a day off, with the exception of two days over which I was ill, since Christmas.  I'm one of those blessed people who is living that first childhood dream I ever had.  Not many people can say that and I don't take it for granted.  I always enjoyed writing and I managed to make a career out of it, creating stories for children, writing inspirational non-fiction with sporting legends, developing life-changing content with professional leaders, and back to my love of imaginative tales for pre-k to young adult readers.  By all definitions, I had "made it" in an  art field!  Despite this, I never celebrated.  I had this constant nagging realization that, 'this is not what I thought "dream-come-true" would feel like.' I was exhausted, overwhelmed, and at a point where I saw two roads.  One was filled with pain . . . go all in!  I may end up in debt and a sleepless wreck, but if I don't pay somebody to do (take your pick:  admin, marketing, sales, prospecting, pitching, etc.), then I can't keep going because I'm losing my mind.  (Or, just up the hours even more, go even longer without a break, and accept the loss of my mind!)  The second road was to take my career and turn it BACK into a hobby!  In other words, take all of this momentum (fifteen plus years' worth) I had taken to make it up to the cusp of enjoyable, fulfilling success and throw it away because it was a whole lot easier on the bottom of the hill. Rick showed me a third road.  He asked me, "Where do you want to be in your life (not just my business) ten years from now?"  I hadn't even thought about that in ages . . . I couldn't remember the last time my dream-job allowed any possibility for dreaming . . . for excitement . . . for celebration . . . for hope.  I was just always trying to land the next publishing contract, write the next book or program.  I was a hamster on a wheel and I could really go nowhere further than the amount of pain I was willing to put myself through to get there.  Plus, the focus was on money, alone, or each project as a step closer to a "big enough" project, and not on the purposes for which I had originally even begun writing. Not only did Rick help me to define what I really wanted to accomplish through my career—financially, with regard to freedom and quality of life, as a reflection of my values, and for my family—but he began to share the steps of how I could get there.  He taught me how to recapture the energy I once had for my creative endeavors while applying business logic and tools that, for once in this artist's life, I could understand and implement.  I joined ActionCOACH right away. Through bi-monthly and quarterly meetings, plus additional offered trainings that I choose, my calendar is balanced, my business is growing both quickly AND strongly, (and my sanity is still intact.)  In fact, my "work" has never been easier and my brand never more powerful.  Five months later, I've had a break; I've had many.  In fact, I work a healthy work-week, now.  I've just made my first hire.  I have more capital coming in than ever before and the pipeline is FULL.  I have strategically planned how I get off the hamster wheel and out of the cage.  Heck, I'm on my way to owning the whole hamster store chain!  Every time I get excited about growing part of my business, Rick shows me other parts I can also grow!  Coaching with Rick Appleby of ActionCOACH has been TRANSFORMATIONAL to my business, career, and LIFE!  I am truly grateful for coaching and Rick as they have put the dream back in dream job.
