It seems like there is never enough time to properly train a new team member. There’s so much to be done and we’re already behind. No matter how talented you are, you can’t do it all alone!
Here’s why good team training needs your undivided attention:
It allows you to be a good steward of the company’s investment.
Depending on the industry and the position, it can cost thousands to tens of thousands of dollars every time a team member has to be replaced. It is also important to consider the loss of continuity and productivity as well as the time and expense to search for, interview, and select the right candidate. Then there’s the “ramp-up” period of low output and extra mentoring while the “newbie” gets acclimatized.
It also compels you to consider the impression on your clients.
What does it say about your company if your service level ebbs and flows like the changing of the tides? Clients expect consistency in their dealings with you.
How does it look if team members are not prepared? This wastes everyone’s time. How risky is it to put the reputation of your business into the hands of someone who lacks the required knowledge or competency to consistently deliver your product or service?
It also affords individuals and teams more than a fair chance to succeed. Are you setting your team up for failure by cutting corners on the learning curve? If you’re doing your job properly, you should have picked the right team member(s).
Can you legitimately expect the team to achieve its goals without proper preparation, guidance, and direction? If you send them “into battle” without the tools, resources, and training to do the job right the first time, you extend the period of adjustment and increase the chances of demoralizing the team. Will they stay? See Number 1 above. This builds the confidence of outsiders.
There are many entities which impact and influence your business. How about bankers who lend, stockholders who invest, attorneys who represent, insurance agents who protect, auditors who verify, coaches who mentor? Would it be safe to say that your team’s demonstration of proficiency and professionalism can increase the favor of your business in their eyes? What might that mean to you and your business with regard to new opportunities down the road? Yes, it preserves your own peace of mind. If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got before!
Have you evaluated your “system” for training your Team? Do you even have one? How do you rate its effectiveness? What sort of feedback do you get from trainees? What do you mean you haven’t been asking them? How long do you want to continue repeating this vicious cycle?
How would it feel to have the right people in the right places consistently doing the right things? Step back and take a good, honest look at the overall performance of the Team. What can you do to help? Use that valuable experience you’ve gained on the roadway of life to take the first step.
Invest some effort in your own well-being. Together Everyone Accomplishes More!
